Yesterday, I did a presentation for the @doula.association.edmonton to discuss what trauma is, how to have a trauma informed lens, and how to take care of yourself when you witness vicurious or secondary trauma. Honestly, each topic could have been its own workshop, and I can't stop thinking about it.

Fertility doulas, Birth workers, and postpartum doulas make a HUGE impact in the spaces they walk into, and it is a privilege to do so.

This was one topic we chatted about, and I wanted to share it today.

Why do home births work?

How do so many women and pregnant people have safe, comfortable, confident home births every day?
I have had many first-time moms and people who are pregnant ask this question. Often, it was their own family doctor who transfers their fear. My own husband asked this question when we were pregnant both times.

The home has amazing irraplaceable benefits, which can only be accessed in the safety and security of your own space. A space free to walk around, eat, use the toilet, and utilize all of the comfort levels at your own leisure.

The home can lead the nervous system through an organic experience of an uninterrupted dose of oxytocin that floods the body with messages to baby that it is time to move to Earth side.

Home births work because mammals crave elements of nature and familiarity to become vulnerable.

And, unless there is an evidence based, actual risk that a homebirth just won't work for the person who is pregnant, a home birth is a safe place to birth your baby.

This photo means so much to me. This is a photo of a first-time mom, labouring with her certified midwife and I (plus her husband and cousin) before having a beautiful, mother led home birth. Trusting the science. Trusting her body. Trusting herself.

Working with children is political. Birth work is political. Compliance is political.

Since I was a university student, I have honored and celebrated the 54 articles of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, as I grow and learn, I realize important people and governments do not ensure these documents are upheld.

This includes the focus on Is rael’s treatment of Pal estin ian children, the "unlawful attacks and the unjustified use of lethal force against children, detention, mistreatment, and ab use of children, the impact of movement restrictions and forcible displacement on children, the protection of education from attack, the rights of children with disabilities, and child labor." As documented by Humans Right Watch in 2022. This then, would include the attacks on Leb a non, S yria, and the like.

This includes the children of the DR of Con go and even U kraine

The government of D T rump and their attack on reproductive rights who have continued to take away parents from living children in the name of pr o life.

And, here in my own home on Native Land, includes an attack from the @alberta_ucp on Trans Children (today is Rememberance Day of Trans people) and the @liberalca
Continued attacks and ignorance assul ts on Indigenous children and their families on Turtle Island.

I call upon the Canadian Govt , AB Govt, and other "world leaders" to make an example and begin to heal the atrocities against children and their families here on Earth.

World Preemie Day.

A Preemature Birth happens before 37 weeks, resulting in a Preemie baby. The number one fact about Preemies that I want to share, though, is that little Preemie babies can grow up to do very big and important things.

This is my Preemie, my daddy (and that chunk jaundice looking baby is me). He was born as a twin on Christmas Eve, with a due date estimated in late February. While twins often come before their due date, that would make him apx 30 weeks when he was born.

While my dad was born early, I can attest he is a thriving, strong, and amazing man. He went to post secondary, is a father to three grown children, and is a Papa for six.

So to all those beautiful parents of Preemie babies, I want you to know that the future can be bright and beautiful.

While the practice was cooped by religions and women were killed for using these practices and labled witches, it is in no way an outdated practice. Specialists, Aunties and Babas still suggest them when appropriate, either with modern medicine or in substitute of (unless there is a contraindications or safety risk).

My own favorites for pregnancy and postpartum include Rose Pettles, Rasberry Leaf, and Calendula. What are your favorite ways to use plant medicine?

I'm really excited to offer this class because it's the first of its kind in Edmonton (that I am aware of) that is a hybrid class.

Class one is in person to explore the parts of labour that are best hands on and hearts open, such as

✨️Discovering your why and how to make choices for your birth
✨️The Anatomy, Physiology and Biomechanics of Pregnancy and Birth
✨️Utilizing Comfort measures and coping strategies, both when alone, and with the support of a partner, no matter where you're labouring

Class two will be organized to help you feel informed around the medical system and understanding when and why interventions happening including

✨️How to make informed decisions
✨️Your rights as the Birthing Person, and how to make decisions based on Modern understanding, Primal instincts and personal preferences
- Medical Interventions in labour; the Evidence for using them as a labouring tool, and not using them

The last class is made to prepare you not only to deliver at Baby but care for baby

✨️In immediate postpartum recovery
✨️ Infant care, including nursing options
✨️And, Understanding Postpartum Mood Disorders, both for the person who just delivered, and their partner

"What is a Doula?

A Doulas is someone who prioritizes your nervous system.

Moving from preschool teacher to birth attendant felt like such an easy transition because in both of these jobs, my biggest goal is to co-regulate with the person so I can help them feel safe, comfortable, and vulnerable. Western society doesn't always like this behavior, though. We have been conditioned to "be quiet," "follow rules," and "don't make a scene." To not feel the feels or experience them within them.

Sometimes destroying the patriarchy looks like doing nothing at all but being present for those who need to co regulate to a regulated nervous system, to move through their journey whether that is physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually.

I'm looking forward to teaching again! It's been much to long. This class is designed as a hybrid for those who can not or just do not want to attend a full day intensive.

🌟 The first class is in person to allow us to explore Birthing From Within style exercises and hands-on coping and comfort measures.
The class will be conveniently held at @nestinwellness. The space is intimate but spacious with street community parking on 124th street starting at 6:00 pm (which means you could grab an early dinner or desert at one of the amazing locations on 124th street!)

🌟 The next two classes are online from the comfort of your bed or living room for convenience.

🌟 In the first class, we'll chat about thought-provoking birthing situations, the evidence behind the choices, and your options.

🌟 During the last class, we will chat postpartum, specifically infant feeding and preparing a partnership for a new baby.

Starry Night Gala through @tinyfootprintssociety is always a wave of emotions. Joy, in seeing friends, past birth families, and colleagues who otherwise I don't see enough of. As we approach a new threshold, which is a space in time where we know we can never come back unchanged, a task we must complete is taking a break or saying goodbye from what was.

As we prepare for labour, postpartum, or our parenting journey, occasionally we can see that event or practice from ahead, but sometimes we don't realize the practice is over until it's already changed or stopped.

The challenge is not in the loss but in the feelings surrounding the loss. Taking a break from a sport you enjoy, going out with friends, being alone with a partner, or even sitting in silence with tea will be an event of the past.

But like all great paths, one day we will be invited to come back to this practice again, and at that time is when we can choose how to proceed. If this is a practice to come back to, or if a new practice will take its place.

"We'd like to break your water," they share. The reason is appealing: "Sometimes we see labour progress really quickly after the water is broken and we could have baby here by morning. It's something your body will do naturally. We're just helping it along. The risk is low, just the small chance of increased infection."

When I was in labour w my son, they offered it like an ultimatum, let them break my water or go home.

The risks of breaking water during labour before baby breaks them include actual risks and anecdotal observational risks worth considering, though, which includes

• Being placed on a time limit (especially if waters are broken before active labour begins)
• Increased risk of infection, especially if there is a need to check the cervix often or the medical staff aid in the delivery
• Cord prolapse resulting in an immediate cesarean
• Baby being stuck in a malposition, which could result in a longer labour, harder pushing phase, and emergency medically led delivery
• If using oxytocin as a method of induction or augmentation, once the water it broken, people have noticed their labour contractions as so intense there is an increased desire for the epidural

When all is said and done, it's hard to remember all the details of your birth. As a birth attendant, I never used to take notes because I was so worried about changing the way someone perceived their birth. I never wanted to shift the narrative without an interactive conversation.

Now I take notes in sequence and leave as little, with the goal of all of my opinions out, but sometimes I still miss important details or am so deeply in it with the labouring person, offering comfort measures etc, I miss important notes.

My own doula told me after my first birth to ask for the hospital birth records at my 6-week check-up, with the reason being "for the baby book." I'm so thankful I got them because the notes explained things no one took the time to share with me. Using medical terms in conversation that at the time I didn't know.

They also offer a lot of support in the event you have a subsequent pregnancy. Sometimes, the medical staff and clinicians change, or the location you're birthing at is different. As your doula, I am happy to read them with you if there are questions to help you debrief the experience and lead you in the correct direction if it's not within my scope.
